Carmageddon - low fps while driving open areas

Post by shupike »

Hello everybody! Need some advice with Carmageddon (DOSBox). The problem is low FPS in open areas, for example, level "Fridge racer". If I'm driving through some tunnel (lelel "Pit stop") - it's OK, FPS is almost 60. My CPU: Core i5 2,5 GHz - so why it can't calculate level geometry in real time?

Yes, it's one of the most demanding DOS Glide games. DOSBox takes a lot of CPU power to emulate it. Apart from lowering draw distance in game options there's not much you can do. Unless you plan to buy a faster CPU.

Is there another method to run this game on modern PC? Without DOSBox?
P.S. CPU is loading at 21-23% while running DOSBox with Carmageddon+nglide - may be I can enable all the cores for this application?

You may want to check this out:

Since you have a Core i5 class CPU, you can check out Intel HAXM accelerator which supports more OSes than Microsoft's WHPX accelerator. On QEMU with acceleration, you can run the game at *ANY* scaled resolution and frame rate rarely dropped below 60FPS. I could do this on a weak Intel low-power, mobile CPU, Core m3-6Y30.

Excuse me - need some more explanation  - I have GOG-version of Carmageddon, it contains DOSBox located in C:\GOG Games\Carmageddon\DOSBOX , also there is a path to Carmageddon game - C:\GOG Games\Carmageddon\CARMA. So I run carmav.exe in this folder, this app is trying to find glide2x.dll (from nglide) - so it finally runs in Glide mode. How can I use Openglide in this configuration? :?
